Growing up in White Plains, New York—just outside the shadow of New York City—meant learning life’s lessons early. One of seven children in a loud Irish Catholic household, Andrew C. Hopkinson was raised in a world where money was never discussed, loyalty was absolute, and discipline came without speeches.
His father, a police officer shaped by personal tragedy and the demands of a violent era, taught his children through action. When the boys fought too hard, they were taken to jail—literally—and locked in a cell before stopping for ice cream on the way home. When Andrew broke his wrist, his exhausted father finished his dinner before calmly driving him to the hospital. Love was steady, not sentimental. Consequences were real.
From serving Mass before school as an altar boy, to rebuilding discarded bicycles, to working adult jobs before he was legally old enough to drive, Andrew learned that independence is earned—and freedom is protected.
Growing Up Blue is not a story about wealth or hardship. It is a story about inheritance—about the quiet strength passed down from a generation of men who ran toward danger and carried their burdens without asking to be seen.
This is a memoir about loyalty, discipline, and the making of a man.
